Classic Children's book comes to life in the Mermaid Theatre's performance of Goodnight Moon, Jan 28th at 2 pm and 4 pm, at The Landmark on Main Street.

Goodnight Moon is a celebration of familiar nighttime rituals, while The Runaway Bunny's pretend tale of leaving home evokes reassuring responses from his loving mum. Both tales feature endearing rabbit characters, and the soothing rhythms of bunny banter and dream-like imagery never fail to infuse young readers with a reassuring sense of security. Mermaid's staged adaptation will bring a new sense of appreciation to stories that have delighted several generations.

In Goodnight Moon, a young rabbit goes through a bedtime ritual of saying goodnight to every object in sight and in his imagination, from the pictures on the walls to the brush and comb, to the moon and stars, to "the old lady whispering hush." The text is written in the form of a rhyming poem.

In The Runaway Bunny, a young bunny tells his mother he wants to run away. "'If you run away,' says his mother, 'I will run after you.'" And so begins an imaginary game of chase. Whatever the little bunny declares he will change himself into -- a fish, a rock, a bird, a boat, etc. -- his mother replies that she, too, will change herself so that she can always keep her little bunny safe and protected.

The performance of Goodnight Moon and The Runaway Bunny employs a variety of styles of puppets -- including rod and table-top puppets -- to tell the two stories. Amazingly, all of the puppets and scenic elements are manipulated by just three puppeteers!

Mermaid Theatre has earned international acclaim for its unique interpretations of the works of Eric Carle (The Very Hungry Caterpillar ), Leo Lionni (Swimmy, Frederick & Inch by Inch) and Sam McBratney (Guess How Much I Love You). These widely-travelled productions incorporate innovative puppetry, striking scenic effects, and evocative original music to provide very young audiences with an effortless introduction to the performing arts and the excitement of reading. Goodnight Moon and The Runaway Bunny features these same elements.

Few writers have been as attuned to the concerns and emotions of childhood as Margaret Wise Brown (1910-1952). Brown, a former teacher, believed that very young children could be fascinated by the simple pleasures of the world around them. Few had previously attempted to write specifically for children aged two to five, and Brown created some of the most enduring and beloved children's books of all time as well as developed the concept of the first durable board book.

Ideal for children ages 2-6.

Choo-Choo Soul’s Genevieve

Born to musician parents in the San Francisco Bay Area, Genevieve Goings has been creating music since childhood. She perfected her live stage performance touring with her neo-soul band, Legato in 2004. Genevieve’s studio career began in hip-hop, writing and recording hooks for multiple local artists. This expanded into joining many hip hop groups and free styling at many San Francisco venues. Her studio experience led her into voice-over work, and to date she can be found on multiple video games, children’s toys, and websites.

Choo-Choo Soul was developed by video game designer Greg Johnson and music director Burke Treischmann. The two met Genevieve Goings when she auditioned for one of the voice-over roles in a video game they were working on together. Genevieve recorded several character voices on that project, some of which were gospel singers. For those characters, Genevieve suggested singing her lines as opposed to speaking them and both Greg and Burke were so blown away by the soul in her voice that Greg edited the script, adding over 10 pages of new singing lines for Genevieve.

Since the success of Disney’s Choo-Choo Soul “With Genevieve!” she has moved to Los Angeles and released the solo album Diversity Personified, a title expressive of not only her diverse heritage, but her effortless knack for combining genres and styles. In addition to touring with Choo-Choo Soul, Genevieve is also currently working with Disney’s ELL division, creating musical curriculum which teaches English as second language to young children.

Choo-Choo Soul’s DC

Constantine “DC” Abramson is a renaissance man of the entertainment world. Break dancing, beat boxing, acting, painting, drawing and performing as mascots for the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers and the NBA’s Golden State Warriors are among his many talents. DC and Genevieve first toured together in the neo-soul band, Legato. In addition to touring regularly across the US and Canada with Choo-Choo Soul, DC is also currently working on a compilation of beat boxing fused with musical arrangements. Constantine is also a visual artist working in oil on canvas and pen and ink.
