Nick Lowe’s Quality Rock and Roll Revue

Starring Los Straitjackets

Wenesday June 22, 2022 at 7:30pm at Landmark Theater

Nick Lowe has made his mark as a producer (Elvis Costello-Graham Parker-Pretenders-The Damned), songwriter of at least three songs you know by heart, short-lived career as a pop star, and a lengthy term as a musicians’ musician. But in his current ‘second act’ as a silver-haired, tender-hearted but sharp-tongued singer-songwriter, he has no equal. Starting with 1995′s ‘The Impossible Bird’ through to 2011′s ‘The Old Magic,’ Nick has turned out a fantastic string of albums, each one devised in his West London home, and recorded with a core of musicians who possess the same veteran savvy. Lowe brings wit and understated excellence to every performance, leading Ben Ratliff of the New York Times to describe his live show as “elegant and nearly devastating.” His new 4 song EP “Tokyo Bay” features Los Straitjackets as his backing band

Los Straitjackets are the leading practitioners of the lost art of the guitar instrumental. Using the music of the Ventures, The Shadows, and with Link Wray and Dick Dale as a jumping off point, the band has taken their unique, high energy brand of original rock & roll around the world. Clad in their trademark Lucha Libre Mexican wrestling masks, the “Jackets” have delivered their trademark guitar licks to 16 albums, thousands of concerts and dozens of films and TV shows.

Their most recent album “What’s So Funny ‘Bout Peace Love & Los Straitjackets” consists of instrumental covers of Nick Lowe Songs

KT Tunstall Music Without Borders

Since scoring a worldwide smash with her debut album Eye To The Telescope in 2004, which went on to sell over 5 million copies, KT Tunstall has remained at the forefront of UK singer- songwriter talent. Subsequent albums cemented the Scottish singer-songwriter's reputation as a major recording talent, as well as a mesmerising live artist.

Tunstall has toured the world many times over, winning a host of British awards and landing a Grammy nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. She lent her tunes to a host of movies and TV shows (Suddenly I See, used in the iconic opening scene of Meryl Streep flick The Devil Wears Prada).

The last few years have seen something of a creative rebirth for Tunstall. She was accepted as one of six annual fellows for the Sundance Film Institute's Composers Lab (hosted by George Lucas's Skywalker Ranch in Northern California) and has since scored music for short and feature films. She has also been named the Inspirational Artist at the Women In Music Awards and was chosen as the first ever female Grand Marshal (following the likes of Sir Sean Connery) to lead April 2018's annual New York Tartan Week parade.

In May 2018 she and Mike McCready, of legendary multi-million selling Pearl Jam, released a cover of Tom Petty's huge hit single I Won't Back Down with proceeds going to Pearl Jam's Vitalogy Foundation.

In 2019, KT headlined across the UK and Europe with her all-female band, including sets at Glastonbury, Isle of Wight, HebCelt, Larmer Tree and Car Fest festivals), toured across the US & Canada, supported Hall & Oates on their UK arena tour and played a handful of shows in Japan.

David Broza & Trio Havana Music Without Borders

Israeli superstar David Broza is considered one of the world's most dynamic and vibrant performers. From his whirlwind finger picking to Flamenco percussion and rhythms, to a signature rock and roll sound, David Broza's charismatic and energetic performances have delighted audiences throughout the world.

In his new show, From Haifa to Havana, Broza brings a unique Cuban twist to his hit songs through a collaboration with Trio Havana.

Band members include: MANUEL ALEJANDRO CARRO aka MANNYA - Cuban-born singer-songwriter and master percussionist with a style firmly rooted in Latin Pop; YUNIEL JIMINEZ "EL GUAJIRO" - master tres guitar player from Santa Clara, Cuba; JORGE BRINGAS - renowned bassist from Havana, Cuba, who played previously with Albita Rodriguez and the late Celia Cruz.

Joining Trio Havana is Israeli flutist ITAI KRISS - dubbed one of the most exciting new flutist-composers on the Cuban music scene, with an eclectic style infused with Jazz, Latin and Middle Eastern sounds.

From his whirlwind fingerpicking to Flamenco percussion and rhythms to a signature rock and roll sound, David Broza's charismatic and energetic performances have delighted audiences throughout the world. Raised in Israel, Spain and England, Broza has performed worldwide since 1977, when his song "Yihye Tov" first hit the airwaves, promoting a message of peace.

Broza has been fascinated with Cuban music since he was a teenager listening to Celia Cruz. Further explorations led him to become absolutely hooked on the Afro-Cuban sound. Introduced by flutist Itai Kriss, Broza first met Trio Havana at a private event in New York and was stunned by their versatility. By the end of the evening they were jamming together and found a special magnetism in the sweeping rhythms. Combining the Cuban sound with Broza's Spanish guitar and songs sung in Spanish, Hebrew and English proved a rich common ground that connected naturally. Six months after meeting, Broza and Trio Havana began touring the US. The result has been pure magic: every show is a mystery, a dance and romance expressed through pulsing rhythms and sweet melodies, resulting in uplifting, energetic performances that leave audiences delighted and exhilarated. davidbroza.net

Aaron Neville Duo

TBA at 8:00 PM at Landmark on Main Street

Aaron Neville Duo Music Without Borders

Until now, it's been easy to separate Aaron Neville's career into two separate but equal strains: the funky stuff he's favored when working with his esteemed band of brothers, and the angelic balladry you associate with him when he's punching his own time card as a solo artist. Casual fans might admit they don't know much -- to borrow a phrase -- about Neville's musical center, but they've perceived a certain split in his career. An education is about to be provided, then, in the form of Apache, a solo album that makes the case for Aaron Neville as the most holistic of soul men. Its hard R&B side matches anything the Neville Brothers ever recorded for true grit, while still allowing plenty of space for a singer who's arguably the most distinctive vocal stylist on the planet to tell it like it is.

Apache also reflects Neville's social and spiritual concerns, marking only the second time in his 56-year recording career that he's co-written nearly an entire album's worth of material. The words are straight out of a poetry journal he began keeping in the 1970s, which more recently migrated to his iPhone. Together with collaborators Eric Krasno (guitarist for the groups Soulive and Rustic) and Dave Gutter (frontman for the Rustic Overtones), Apache is a modern/revivalist marvel harking back to a golden age that produced classics like Marvin Gaye's What's Goin' On.

"I call it The Other Side of Aaron," says the 75-year-old legend, offering an alternative album title, "because people know me from doing the ballads and New Orleans stuff. They're getting another feel of Aaron" -- a record that touches on the mystic gumbo of "Yellow Moon" and sheer sweetness of "Everybody Plays the Fool" while diverging toward a third path we've never quite heard from Neville in the studio.

While Neville sometimes tours with his quintet, this is a smaller, more intimate show that features Neville and keyboard player Michael Goods. "I like the energy of the quintet," he says, "and I also like the laid-back quality of the duo, just coming off the top of my head with things, not having to worry about whether we rehearsed it. Sometimes I put Michael on the spot, because I'll come up with something he's never heard before, but then he'll catch it and that will make it even cooler. I bring the audience back to where I first started, with some Nat King Cole or anything that comes to my mind..."

And that mind is constantly racing, musically, just as it was in the days when the teachers would catch him deep in a distracted schoolboy reverie. "Because I've got about 10 million songs in my head. Some of 'em wake me up at 3:00 in the morning, and I've got to sing the whole song to myself before I can get back to sleep, to make sure I know all the words," he laughs. His middle-of-the-night song insomnia can make for his next audience's dream come true.

Los Lobos

Thursday, February 20, 2020 at 7:30 PM at Landmark on Main Street

Los Lobos Music Without Borders

Los Lobos has sold millions of records, won prestigious awards and made fans around the world. But perhaps its most lasting impact will be how well its music embodies the idea of America as a cultural melting pot. In it, styles like son jarocho, and norteño, and Tejano, and folk, and country, and doo-wop, and soul, and R&B, and rock 'n' roll and punk all come together to create a new sound that's greater than the sum of its parts.

The Grammy®-winning band, which has prided itself on never covering the same ground twice while making music for nearly 50 years.

Their journey began in 1973, when Hidalgo (vocals, guitar, and pretty much anything with strings), Perez (drums, vocals, guitar), Rosas (vocals, guitar), and Lozano (bass, vocals, guitarrón) earned their stripes playing revved-up versions of Mexican folk music in restaurants and at parties. The band evolved in the 1980s as it tapped into L.A.'s burgeoning punk and college rock scenes.

Early on, Los Lobos enjoyed critical success, winning the Grammy® for Best Mexican-American Performance for "Anselma" from its 1983 EP ...And a Time to Dance. A year later, the group released its full-length, major-label debut, How Will the Wolf Survive? Co-produced by Berlin and T. Bone Burnett, the album helped Los Lobos tie with Bruce Springsteen as Rolling Stone's Artist of the Year.

Since then, Los Lobos has continued to deliver daring and diverse albums. The band's live shows never disappoint, as documented on the recent concert recordings Live at the Fillmore (2005) and Disconnected in New York City (2013). Through the years, they've managed to keep things interesting with unexpected side trips like an album of Disney songs in 2009, along with countless contributions to tribute albums and film soundtracks. One of those - "Mariachi Suite" from the 1995 film Desperado ¬- earned the band a Grammy® for Best Pop Instrumental Performance.

Bob Mould - Sunshine Rock

Winter 2020 Solo Electric Tour

Friday, January 31, 2020 at 8:00 PM at Landmark on Main Street

Bob Mould Music Without Borders

Ever-evolving artist Bob Mould -- whose face belongs on the Mount Rushmore of alternative music -- decided to "write to the sunshine," as he describes it, not because he likes the current administration. It comes from a more personal place -- a place found in Berlin, Germany, where he's spent the majority of the last three years. Here Mould would draw inspiration from the new environments.

The theme, the cathartic vocals, and the strings all amount to Mould's catchiest, grabbiest album since Copper Blue, the acclaimed 1992 debut of his trio Sugar. Back then, Mould's work in Hüsker Dü, as a solo artist, and in Sugar helped define the sound of guitar rock in the alternative age. Sunshine Rock finds him doing it again for an era that has ostensibly eschewed rock.

Sunshine Rock follows the 2016 release of Patch the Sky, which was hailed by Rolling Stone as "conjuring the ecstatic rage of his earlier bands for a grim new era" and as "tight, sharp musings on aging, fizzled relationships and death that are melodic enough to sound like songs of victory" by the New York Times. Patch the Sky completed a trilogy including its 2014 predecessor Beauty & Ruinand 2012's Silver Age.

Special Guest: Will Johnson. Over the course of two decades and a dozen albums, Will Johnson fronted the yin and yang that was Centro-matic / South San Gabriel. Johnson's sixth solo album, Wire Mountain will be released this fall by Austin-based label Keeled Scales.

We Banjo 3's fifth album, Haven, released in 2018 has achieved International critical acclaim, and is adored by their irrepressible and ever-growing legion of fans. Haven became the first Irish album to reach Billboard Bluegrass No.1 and was awarded Best Folk Album in the RTE Folk Awards, the national broadcaster of Ireland.
